Nature as a tool of Design – Biomimicry & Biophilic Design

Senior Project 2016

Mankind is part of a brilliant planet and surrounded by geniuses of natural phenomena and wonder, but appreciation for the blessings that nature provides is veritably lacking. This is in part due to the numerous effects of the industrial revolution, that have indirectly resulted in destruction to the environment and parted mankind from nature. As inventors and designers, we need to be inspired by the genius embedded in nature, as well as embrace a critical view of the environmental issues and social problem-solving methods we currently employ, so that we may progress towards a sustainable world inspired by Mother Nature. The following research aims to explore the depth of nature-inspired potentials of different organisms’ adaptations in nature, while considering the importance of seeing, feeling and experiencing nature in daily life routines.

In order to create a vision of how the natural world and the human world can be rejoined, theories linking nature to Islam, humans and historical perspectives were generated, taking into consideration the revolution of nature in design. The research for this project was carried out based on two nature enhancers: biomimicry – finding sustainable solutions to human challenges, by mimicking how living organisms have survived – and biophilia – a design theory allowing the natural world to be part of the human world using 14 patterns of design. These two ideologies were intensively studied in order to nurture and enhance the global community by using characteristics from nature, providing the ultimate comfortable designs for humans.
